Every human being has got a heart. This heart is the source of every breath. Without the heart, every other organ in the body becomes useless. Out of the heart proceed many devices which the brain processes before being spoken through the mouth. Because of these facts, the heart has been a significant symbol of almost every civilization. It has been considered as a center of physical, emotional and spiritual life.
In the West, the most common meaning for the heart symbol is love. For the people of eastern civilization, the heart is a symbol of wisdom and spirituality. And what is the meaning of the heart in the Bible? In the article, I try to answer this question.
Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23)
The heart though precious to us is the seat of good and bad. The definition of the heart as defined by the Bible can not only be traced to one verse. It is mentioned throughout the Bible in many chapters and verses. It is worthy to note that since the Bible mentioned the heart more than 800 times, then it should be significant to God and the possessor of the heart. God values our heart so much that he admonishes us in Proverbs 4: 23 to guide our heart with all diligence for out of it proceeds good or bad.
Your heart encompasses a body, soul, and spirit
There are many verses in the Bible that says a word or two about the Heart. God created man with a body, soul, and spirit. Our heart encompasses these three and should not be seen as the fourth. The heart is that part of the body which controls the body, soul, and spirit. In other words, the heart controls our emotions, our minds, and our conscience.
What does the Bible say about Heart?
As previously highlighted above, the Bible mentions the heart in several verses. Some of these verses can be found in Hebrews 10:22 (“Let us come forward to the Holy of Holies with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”)
Acts 11: 23 (“Who, when he arrived and saw the grace of God, rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain with the Lord with purpose of heart.”)
Matthew 9:4 (“And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, Why are you thinking evil things in your hearts?”)
God’s desire is to have an affectionate and loving relationship with him. He wants his children to have and share the same heart with him and that is the reason he created us with a heart.
The heart is so important to God that he admonishes us in his word to love him from the whole of our heart. (Mark 12:30) Remember that without the heart, we wouldn’t know what it means to love or what being in love is neither would anyone have the sense of getting to love.
The relationship Gods’ children have with him begins from the heart. It is through the heart we connect with him in matters concerning the spirit. To have the attention of God, out heart must be tuned towards him, to hear and receive from him. Whenever the heart wonders around, we miss it in the presence of God.
Our heart is the gateway to the real us, and to our existence. Human being controls what goes into the heart. Whatever is allowed into our inner being is as a result of what we open our hearts to receive.
Many non-believers who are yet to come to the knowledge of God is as a result of their heart not tuned to God. In circumstances like this, when faced with loved ones or a family member who doesn’t know what it means to be in a good relationship with God, It is our duty to commit such hearts to the Lord. The Bible says in Proverbs 21:1 that the Kings’ heart is in the hand of the Lord and he turns it to wherever he pleases. So for many of us that have been appealing to friends and family to give their lives to Christ, commit them to Gods hands and let the Holy Spirit take control.
Our Heart and Having Relationship with God
God has created us in a beautiful and marvelous way. He created us with a spirit to contact, contain and receive him and also created us with a heart to love him. He wants to take over our lives and he wants us to love him in return with the whole of our heart. This is what God wants from you and me as his sons and daughters.
We must all understand that our relationship with God begins right from the heart and this relationship is maintained by our heart. This makes our heart very important to God and to us. This is also the reason you must guide your heart diligently so as not to allow what will interfere with your relationship with God to set in.
Many of the problems faced by Christians today are “heart problems”. When you allow your heart take in that which is not positive, then we take wrong decisions which ultimately affect us.
Let the Bible verses of this article constantly be in your mind, may God help us all. Amen
