What is Spiritual Growth?

Every month more than 3600 people type into the Google browser the phrase “what is a spiritual growth”. In this post, I will answer the question of what does spiritual growth mean for Christians?

what is spiritual growth

We all know what is physical growth…

physical growthIn the physical world, it is glaring without much meditation that things move from small to big, low to high, simple to complex and so on. This is to say that whatever growth that happens to any phenomenon on earth, starts from little till great blossoming finally takes place. For example, you see a baby today, and in few years’ time, the baby is already grown and in high-school.

… and Academic and career growth

academic growthIn achieving a university degree, you start from somewhere, which means that you don’t just bag it at once. There must have been some learning so that you will be knowledgeable enough to be an expert in your choice of career. This signifies that growth has taken place in you academically. Thus, growth is one of the wonders of life, because someone may be nothing today, but tomorrow, such as become a different person.

But, what is Spiritual growth?

As it is in the physical, so also it is in the spiritual. We don’t just attain spirituality in a day, there must have been some things about the spiritual that we know before we can say that we have achieved growth spiritually.

Spiritual growth is the increase in the awareness of someone’s soul or spirit to understand and use spiritual things to his or her advantage. Thus, spiritual growth is the accumulation of spiritual power; having power, whether physical or spiritual makes you do easily what others find difficult to do. Power makes things happen, and if you are with spiritual power, you are able to make things happen in the spirit to manifest in the physical world.

Spiritual growth in Christianity

christian spiritual growthSpiritual growth in Christianity means that you are more in alignment with the wisdom and knowledge that are the keys to the things of the Spirit. Now, ‘‘a man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from above,’’ (John 3:27). You cannot attain spiritual growth in the Lord Jesus if it doesn’t pleases the Lord who owns all things in His power to release it.

How do you get spiritual growth in Jesus Christ?

You may ask that, how do I get spiritual growth in the Lord Jesus? You start by accepting the Lord Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

This means you are accepted into the family of God and qualified to grow in Him. Physically, we can’t grow or develop without eating, so also we can’t get spiritual growth without spiritual food. The spiritual food is the word of God which feeds your soul.

BibleThe constant feeding of your soul with the word of God makes your soul rich in spiritual things. After some time, your soul or mind is glued to the truth in these words so that you are able to carry out the teachings in them, which means there is no forgetfulness of the word in you. You live out what you are reading and become a living epistle, written by the Spirit of God, (2 Corinthians 3:3, ).

You cannot grow spiritually in God if you neglect the word of God because, in the word of God, you find life and faith. It is a truth of the word that gives you faith by which you live right to attain the fruits of the Spirit that was revealed in Galatians 5:22-23.

It is also by the word of God that you get faith to believe in the gifts of the Spirit which are the signs that should follow those who believe in the Lord Jesus, (1 Corinthians 12:1-11, Mark 16:17-18).
Therefore, the signs of spiritual growth in Christianity is not evident only by coming to church frequently, but by the manifestation of fruits and gifts of the Spirit of God in us.
