Women play a large part in the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. Everyone on earth has been given specific roles to perform. His closest friends as recorded in the New Testament were women. They were also the last to leave Jesus’ cross and it was also a woman that was the first to see Jesus after he resurrected from the grave. While on earth, many men and women were with him. There were several women who followed him as he traveled about in the propagation of the gospel and they supported him accordingly.
People are generally inclined to believe that, the role of a woman is in the kitchen and this notion should be changed by all and sundry. We need to remind one another that Jesus appreciated and commended Mary when she sat at his feet to learn from him despite her sister’s insistence to help her out in the kitchen.
It should be noted that it was not mentioned in the scriptures that women were called to minister. Our Lord Jesus did not choose any woman to be among his 12 disciples. He neither sent them to teach, preach or heal. At the Lord’s Supper, no woman was invited too (Matthew 26:20.) The great commission in Matthew 28: 16-20 was given to men.
In summary, women attended and ministered to our Lord but they were never in the capacity of an authority such as preaching or teaching.
Apostle Paul held women in high esteem giving rise to the greetings he accorded women in the last chapter of the book of Romans. His teachings enhanced the position of a married woman but there was not a time he allowed women to assume the position of a leader.
His admonition to women as recorded in 1st Timothy 2:9:12 is to adorn themselves in proper clothing by dressing modestly and to be submissive to the authority of a man.
“Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments but rather by means of good works, as befits women making a claim to godliness. Let a woman quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet”.
The specific roles of women are stated below:
- They are help mates to the men: Genesis 2:18, Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
- They are to stand dignified: 1st Timothy 3: 11, Women must likewise be dignified, not of malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things.
- They are to obey the men especially the wives who are to submit to their husbands. 1st Peter 3:1-6
- They are to be a source of encouragement to everyone around them. Titus 2:3-5
- They are to train their children in the way of the Lord.
- They are to find fulfillment in helping their husbands to lead.
In as much as roles of woman does not involve teaching or preaching in the Church, God has placed the woman in their capacity to serve as a support to their husband. This is line with the general saying that where there is a successful man, there lies a successful woman. With this, everyone and most especially the men should know the value of the role of a woman in the ministry.
