Our parish church is dedicated to st. Michael Archangel and thus this angel is extremely loved. His image spreads across the church’s ceiling. During prayers in the church, my eyes often escape to the said beautiful image of our Patron Saint. Prayer to st. Michael Archangel is prayed after every mass.
Who is St. Michael Archangel?
St. Michael Archangel is, besides St. Rafael and St. Gabriel, an angel with the highest mission in the Church. His name derives from Hebrew and means Who is like God. He is the patron and saint of dying people, grocers, soldiers, fencing, banking, and artists. He has many Catholic churches around the world dedicated to him.
The Church has always been expressing respect towards him, as it accepts him as a powerful ally in the eternal battle with Satan and the forces of evil. In the Old Testament, he was considered to be the guardian of the chosen people. In the New Testament, he is considered to be the guardian and protector of the Church.

Prayer to St. Michael Archangel
Prayer to St. Michael Archangel was published by the Pope Leon XIII in 1886. It was prayed after every work’s day mass. It was a response to a vision that the pope had during a prayer, where he saw a devil, that furiously attacked a Church of Christ. He wanted the Church to battle the devil with the help of a spiritual weapon.
After the 2nd Vatican Council, the prayer isn’t regularly used anymore, as it became so widespread, that the believers prayed it alone and didn’t need spiritual guidance anymore. Even so, the prayer stayed in use at some places and thus the prayer to St. Michael Archangel can still be heard at the end of mass.
