Spiritual Growth and Bible

What is spiritual growth?

Spiritual growth is a process that starts when an individual accepts Jesus Christ as his or her personal Savior. He or she is born again of the Holy Spirit and decides to abide and live “in Christ Jesus”.

The Apostle Paul in the scriptures said that spiritual growth is a long ongoing process:

It is not that I have already taken hold of it or have already attained perfect maturity, but I continue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ [Jesus].  Brothers, I for my part do not consider myself to have taken possession. Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind but straining forward to what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14, NABRE, ).

Even the Apostle Paul confirmed he had not arrived, yet he continually pressed toward the mark.

Therefore, in order for Christians to grow and flourish spiritually, he or she must make a choice to study God’s Word, renewing of your mind through Christ, and then be totally obedient to the word.

The book of Romans 12:1-2 says, urge you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship.  Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

Accomplishing Growth

What are the indications of spiritual growth?

Spiritual fruitsSpiritual growth is learning how to walk in obedience and in accordance with the will of God. It is simply deciding to live by God’s perspective rather than your human viewpoint.

Galatians 5:16 and 25 give insight, “ I say then, walk in the spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh..…If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Douay-Rheims)

The word “walk” in verse 16 originated from the Greek word peripateo, meaning “to walk with a purpose in view.”

The word “walk” in verse 25 is translated from another Greek word stoicheo and it means “step by step, a step at a time.” It is learning to walk under the instruction and supervision of another, that person is the Holy Spirit. Since believers are indwelt by the Spirit, they should also walk under His control.

How can you grow spiritually?

Studying God’s Word.

2 Timothy 2:15 3:16-17 instructs,“ Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15, NRSVCE).

All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work  (2 Timothy  3: 16-17, NRSVCE).

This is God’s blueprint and instruction on how you can become spiritually mature. It is not done by magic, but it is done by deciding to apply God’s Word in the everyday circumstance we find ourselves. As you walk step-by-step, applying God’s Word to your life, you will see growth spiritually.

Spiritual growth should be a priority for all Believers. “Everyone who lives on milk lacks experience of the word of righteousness, for he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those whose faculties are trained by practice to discern good and evil.” (Hebrews 5:13-14, NABRE).

As a believer, you are not to be fed with milk but instead, you are called to chew on the “solid food” which is God’s Word.
